The Outdoor Industries Women's Coalition (OIWC) is pleased to announce the 2010 winners of the SnowSports Industry Pioneering Woman and First Ascent awards: Amy Magyar of Burton Snowboards and Kelly Maggs of REI, respectively. Designed to encourage and support female industry participation in the industry by recognizing established mentors and promising newcomers, the awards also present an open opportunity to acknowledge exceptional industry women across all professional levels. All winners will be formally presented at SIA during an OIWC gathering on Jan 30.

As winner of the Pioneering Woman award, Amy Magyar exemplifies the qualities and leadership of a woman who actively furthers the vision of the OIWC by demonstrating an outstanding commitment to mentoring female colleagues within the SnowSports Industry.

Magyar was nominated in 2008 by Chuck Mason, and again this year by John (JT) Thoubboron, both of Burton Snowboards. Thoubboron, Director of Service at Burton, stated in his nomination, "Amy is an exceptional coach and team-builder with a contagious uplifting attitude. She recently made the shift from Sales to Service and instantly made a difference to her team and the customers with daily examples of passion and caring and commitment.”

In his 2008 nomination, Mason said, "Amy is a great fit for the Pioneering Woman Award. She joined [Burton] at a manager's level and quickly immersed herself in helping women develop professionally within the company. Amy has devoted professional as well as personal time to such worthy endeavors as co-chairing the Burton Women's Mentoring Network, participating in Burton's Women's Leadership Initiative, encouraging coaching programs among her peers, and helping orchestrate events such as Burton's Women's Leadership Day held in March, 2008. Over Amy's tenure with Burton, she has succeeded professionally, being promoted from Manager to Director of Soft Goods Sales. Amy has played an instrumental role in Burton's Women's Leadership Initiative, aimed at professional development of management level women within Burton… She has effortlessly embodied the coaching philosophy and in doing so has given back to the Burton community immensely. For the reasons stated, and beyond, Amy Magyar is a genuine fit for the Pioneering Woman Award.”

Winning the 2010 First Ascent Award, Kelly Maggs has demonstrated strong potential for leadership, despite her relative newcomer status in the SnowSports industry. She also furthers the vision of OIWC by increasing visibility of talented young women exhibiting the skills for long-term success.

Maggs was nominated by Susan Viscon, Director of Merchandising – Actionsports for REI. In her nomination, Susan stated, "Kelly has been in retail for over 20 years and more recently with REI for the past 5 years. In spring of 2008, Kelly took on her new responsibilities in the SnowSports division. She brought her talent in the fashion and softgoods business and applied her sense of style and partnership to the Ski and Snowboard hardgoods departments. From the beginning she has built healthy partnerships with our vendors and during one of the most difficult Snow season in winter 2008/2009 Kelly collaborated with key partners, strategized on how to keep the business moving, and focused everyone's efforts on the future. Through very difficult times we had multiple vendors and internal partners share that Kelly was top notch and an excellent buyer. Now in her second year, she is reaping the benefits of a visionary outlook. She has transformed the REI stores and has rethought how a customer shops for equipment. Stores, Vendors, online partners, competitors, and customers have noticed the difference. Additionally, she is a pleasure to work with and has a heart of gold.

This year's SnowSports Industry Pioneering Woman and First Ascent awards will be announced and a trophy will be bestowed at the OIWC Gathering during SIA, January 30, 12:00-1:00 SIA room 403/404, please join us in congratulating the winners.  Event registration and additional information is online at:
