The Outdoor Industries Women’s Coalition (OIWC) is hosting an event Thursday, April 9th for Bay Area women at the REI store in Berkeley, California  (1338 San Pablo Avenue) from 4:30-7 p.m. to provide an opportunity for networking, education and career path discussion and planning. Centered on the group’s recently released industry-wide satisfaction survey, the evening will share the study's results including women’s views surrounding career opportunities, compensation and benefits within the Outdoor, Bike, and Ski Industries. The event entitled, Developing Your Career Path, will be led by Arlene Blum, a biophysical chemist, author and mountaineer and will be an evening devoted to creating and achieving personal and professional goals within the outdoor space.

“The Outdoor Industries Women’s Coalition is excited to discuss the feedback we received from our recent satisfaction survey, as we discovered that 76% of respondents were interested in a clear career path but only 37% say their companies were doing well in this area,” said Sally Grimes, executive director of the OIWC. “Having the ability to offer a networking opportunity to Bay Area members and women outdoor enthusiasts is a great opportunity to learn from and offer a better understanding as to how we can improve current results, increasing our quality of life within the industry we work and love.”

Timely with the current economy, OIWC, along with Leisure Trends, identified specific benefits that enhance women’s job satisfaction, suggesting the study results could help companies find creative solutions in trying times to keep employee morale high. The results advocate that women in the snow, bike and outdoor industries, strongly value a good work/life balance.

The OIWC event will open and close with networking sessions and offer leadership, as well as insight from three influential women in the industry on how they’ve managed their career paths and succeeded in the outdoor space. Panel discussion with the influential women, including Thayer Sylvester, CEO/Owner Carve Designs; Julie Skirving, Overland Equipment; and Laura Miera, VP of Global Production at Marmot, will follow a talk by Arlene Blum on setting, maintaining and achieving goals. An open question and answer period, along with a no-host happy hour at T-Rex’s (1300 Tenth Street) will wrap-up the evening’s events.

Grimes added, “The OIWC appreciates the local sponsors, as without their participation, this event would not be possible. Thank you REI, Marmot, Overland Equipment, and Carve Designs.”

Discover how these women defined their career paths and learn more about how you can manage the direction of your own career.  The event is free for OIWC members and $20 for non-members.
